Weekly Project Update – I-395/S.R. 836/I-95 Design-Build Project – September 9, 2026

BRIDGE BEAM AND PIER CAP INSTALLATION

Construction continues to advance on the new S.R. 836 double-decked roadway over the Miami River. The photos above show crews using a specially designed 488-foot-long gantry to install massive precast pier caps and bridge beams that will form the new elevated roadway. The precast pier caps, which weigh approximately 90 tons each, are placed ahead of the beams they will eventually support. The bridge beams are approximately 154 feet long and weigh 98 tons each. The specialized gantry allows crews to lift and precisely place these large structural components over the existing roadway and the Miami River as the new double-decked roadway continues to take shape.

I-95 ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

• All new concrete pavement has been completed from NE 17 Street to NW 29 Street, as well as along northbound I-95 from NW 8 Street to NW 17 Street. 
• To date, approximately 138 million pounds of concrete have been used to replace the existing pavement, enhancing safety and increasing the long-term durability of this heavily traveled corridor.
• Continued concrete pavement replacement along remaining sections of southbound I-95 between NW 17 Street and NW 8 Street
• Installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices along the corridor
• Traffic railing retrofits on several bridges within the project limits

I-95 LANE CLOSURES

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – Up to two lanes on southbound I-95 from NW 29 Street to NW 8 Street will be closed as needed between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.
   
• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – Up to two lanes on northbound I-95 will be closed as needed from NW 8 Street to NW 29 Street between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.

SOUTHBOUND I-95 RAMP TO EASTBOUND I-395 DETOUR

• Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10 – The southbound I-95 ramp to eastbound I-395 will be closed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Drivers can: 
  • Continue south on I-95, exit at the NW 8 Street ramp (Exit 3B)
  • Turn left on NW 8 Street, continue east on NW 8 Street
  • Turn left at Biscayne Boulevard to access the A1A North/Miami Beach Ramp

NW 17 STREET NIGHTTIME FULL CLOSURE UNDER I-95

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – All travel lanes on NW 17 Street under I-95 will be closed between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. to allow the contractor to work on the bridge over the roadway. Drivers can use NW 20 Street as an alternate route.

I-395 ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

I-395 MAINLINE LANE CLOSURES

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – One lane on mainline eastbound I-395 will be closed as needed from I-95 to Biscayne Boulevard between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
   
• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – Up to two lanes on mainline westbound I-395 will be closed as needed from Biscayne Boulevard to I-95 between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

FULL CLOSURE OF BISCAYNE BOULEVARD, NE 13 STREET AND SOUTHBOUND NORTH BAYSHORE DRIVE

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – The following closures will be implemented between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. for drainage and roadway work. Daytime lane closures will also be necessary at times. The start and end times will be adjusted on special event days.
  • All northbound and southbound lanes on Biscayne Boulevard from NE 14 Street to NE 11 Terrace
  • All lanes on NE 13 Street from N Bayshore Drive to NE 2 Avenue
  • All southbound lanes on North Bayshore Drive from NE 14 Street to NE 13 Street

DAYTIME FULL CLOSURE OF NW 14 STREET

• Friday, September 11 through Friday, October 30 – NW 14 Street from NW 3 Avenue to NW 1 Place will be closed Monday through Saturday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., to erect precast roadway segments. Drivers and pedestrians can use the detours shown here.
  • Drivers on eastbound NW 14 Street can:
    • Turn right on NW 3 Avenue, then turn left on NW 13 Street
    • Turn left on NW 1 Place to connect with NW 14 Street
  • Drivers on westbound NW 14 Street can:
    • Turn right on NW 1 Place, then turn left on NW 16 Street
    • Turn left on NW 2 Avenue to continue onto NW 16 Street
    • Turn left on NW 3 Avenue to connect with NW 14 Street

DAYTIME CLOSURES OF SOUTHBOUND NORTH BAYSHORE DRIVE

• Thursday, September 10, Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – Southbound North Bayshore Drive will be closed as needed between NE 13 Street and NE 14 Street, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for drainage work.
  • Southbound detour: Drivers traveling southbound on North Bayshore Drive can turn right on NE 15 Street or NE 14 Street to connect with Biscayne Boulevard.

DAYTIME LANE CLOSURES BISCAYNE BOULEVARD

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Monday, September 14 through Friday, September 18 – Single lane closures on northbound and southbound Biscayne Boulevard will be implemented as needed from NE 11 Street to NE 14 Street between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. 

NW 1 PLACE DETOUR

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 – NW 1 Place will be closed from NW 13 Street to NW 14 Street between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to move a crane across the roadway. Drivers can use NW 2 Avenue as an alternate route.

S.R. 836 ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

• Nighttime installation of precast bridge pier cap segments and beams for the new S.R. 836 double-decked roadway, from over the Miami River to the Health District area
• Preparations to reconstruct the entire fendering system in the Miami River
• Tying reinforcing steel for the straddle bent support structure over eastbound S.R. 836, just west of NW 7 Avenue
• Installation and removal of steel sheet piling in the S.R. 836 median between NW 12 Avenue and I-95 to support ongoing construction
• Continued foundation construction in the S.R. 836 median and along adjacent roadways from NW 12 Avenue to I-95 for the new double-decked roadway
• Construction of support piers for the double-decked roadway within the Midtown Interchange
• Installation of stay-in-place forms and reinforcing steel in preparation for concrete deck pours for the new double-decked roadway
  
  NOTE: Nearby residents and businesses may experience periods of higher-than-normal noise levels during these activities. All efforts are being made to minimize noise levels to the fullest extent possible.

S.R. 836 LANE CLOSURES

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 -Two eastbound lanes on S.R. 836 from NW 17 Avenue to I-95 will be closed as needed for bridge work between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.
   
• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – Two westbound lanes on S.R. 836 from I-95 to NW 17 Avenue will be closed as needed for bridge work between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.

WEEKEND DAYTIME S.R. 836 LANE CLOSURES

• Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 – One westbound left lane on I-395/S.R. 836 from east of I-95 to east of NW 12 Avenue and one eastbound left lane from NW 12 Avenue to I-95 will be closed for bridge foundation work between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. 

COMPLETE CLOSURE OF EASTBOUND S.R. 836 AT NW 17 AVENUE

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – All eastbound S.R. 836 travel lanes will be closed at NW 17 Avenue between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. The start and end times will be adjusted on special event days.
  The detours noted below and shown here will be in place to guide drivers around the work area. Drivers on eastbound S.R. 836 will:
  • Exit at NW 17 Avenue, then continue south across NW 7 Street
  • Turn left at SW 1 Street and continue east
  • Turn right at South Miami Avenue
  • Turn right to access the ramp to I-95 north or south
  • Drivers going to Biscayne Boulevard and the MacArthur Causeway can continue east on SW 1 Street and turn left on Biscayne Boulevard to connect with the MacArthur Causeway entrance ramp at NE 11 Terrace

Drivers on NW 12 Avenue wanting to access eastbound S.R. 836, I-95, Biscayne Boulevard, and the MacArthur Causeway can continue south on NW 12 Avenue, turn left at SW 1 Street, and follow the detours above.

FULL CLOSURE OF WESTBOUND S.R. 836

• Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11 and Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18 – All westbound lanes on S.R. 836 will be closed as needed from NW 12 Avenue to NW 17 Avenue between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. The start and end times will be adjusted on special event days. Drivers can:
  • Exit at the NW 12 Avenue ramp, then turn left on NW 12 Avenue
  • Turn right on NW 7 Street
  • Turn right on NW 27 Avenue and continue north to connect with the westbound S.R. 836 ramp

CLOSURE OF NW 17 AVENUE RAMPS TO WESTBOUND S.R. 836

• Thursday, September 10 – The NW 17 Avenue entrance ramps to westbound S.R. 836 will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Drivers can:
  • Go west on NW 7 Street, turn right on NW 27 Avenue
  • Continue north on NW 27 Avenue to access the westbound S.R. 836 entrance ramp
