Construction continues to advance on the westbound I-395 Signature Bridge superstructure, with the photos above showing crews installing reinforcing steel, formwork, and post-tensioning ducts and placing concrete for the massive box-girder deck. The post-tensioning system will add strength as the deck is constructed and work with the bridge’s arches and stay cables to support the completed superstructure. Recent concrete operations have included pours for the deck, webs, and diaphragms that make up the box girder. As work progresses, these sections are coming together to form the new westbound I-395 roadway.
Once complete, the eastbound and westbound superstructures will each measure approximately 1,200 feet long and 100 feet wide. Together, they will contain more than 26,000 cubic yards of concrete, 15 million pounds of reinforcing steel and approximately 2,000 post-tensioning tendons, and will be supported by 136 stay cables.
I-95 ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES
- All new concrete pavement has been completed from NE 17 Street to NW 29 Street, as well as along northbound I-95 from NW 8 Street to NW 17 Street.
- To date, approximately 138 million pounds of concrete have been used to replace the existing pavement, enhancing safety and increasing the long-term durability of this heavily traveled corridor.
- Continued concrete pavement replacement along remaining sections of southbound I-95 between NW 17 Street and NW 8 Street
- Installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices along the corridor
- Traffic railing retrofits on several bridges within the project limits
I-95 LANE CLOSURES
- Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18 and Sunday, September 20 through Friday, September 25 – Up to two lanes on southbound I-95 from NW 29 Street to NW 8 Street will be closed as needed between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.
- Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18 and Sunday, September 20 through Friday, September 25 – Up to two lanes on northbound I-95 will be closed as needed from NW 8 Street to NW 29 Street between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.
I-395 ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES
Signature Bridge
- Advancing construction of the first of three cast-in-place starter arch elements for each of the two remaining signature bridge arches
- Construction of MSE walls that will connect the westbound signature bridge roadway deck to the MacArthur Causeway
- Falsework installation adjacent to Biscayne Boulevard
- Ongoing drainage improvements throughout the corridor

I-395 Segmental Bridges Connecting the Signature Bridge to I-95 and S.R. 836
- Daytime and nighttime installation of precast roadway segments, along with construction of concrete caps and columns from NW 1 Place to the Midtown Interchange
- Construction of substructure elements for the new pedestrian bridge over the FEC rail tracks
- Ongoing roadway improvements along I-395 from the MacArthur Causeway to I-95
- Installation of bridge beams between NW 3 Avenue and the Midtown Interchange for the new I-395 connection to S.R. 836
- Continued roadway and bridge work in preparation for the upcoming opening of the new westbound I-395 ramp to southbound I-95

- Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18 and Sunday, September 20 through Friday, September 25 – The following closures will be implemented between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. for drainage and roadway work. Daytime lane closures will also be necessary at times. The start and end times will be adjusted on special event days.

NW 2 AVENUE DETOUR
- Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18 and Sunday, September 20 through Friday, September 25 – NW 2 Avenue will be closed from NW 13 Street to NW 14 Street between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The closure is necessary to allow the contractor to move a crane across the roadway. Drivers should follow the posted detour routes.
NORTH MIAMI COURT DETOUR
- Monday, September 21 through Friday, September 25 – North Miami Court will be closed from NW 14 Street to NW 13 Street between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The closure is necessary to allow the contractor to perform drainage operations. Drivers should follow the posted detour routes.
FULL CLOSURES OF NE 13 STREET
- Thursday, September 17 – NE 13 Street from NE 2 Avenue to NE 1 Avenue and from NE 1 Avenue to North Miami Avenue will be intermittently closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. while crews safely install overhead sign structures.
- Drivers heading to the westbound I-395 entrance ramp can use NW 14 Street and access the ramp via North Miami Avenue.
S.R. 836 ONGOING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES
- Nighttime installation of precast bridge pier cap segments and beams for the new S.R. 836 double-decked roadway, from over the Miami River to the Health District area
- Preparations to reconstruct the entire fendering system in the Miami River
- Tying reinforcing steel for the straddle bent support structure over eastbound S.R. 836, just west of NW 7 Avenue
- Installation and removal of steel sheet piling in the S.R. 836 median between NW 12 Avenue and I-95 to support ongoing construction
- Continued foundation construction in the S.R. 836 median and along adjacent roadways from NW 12 Avenue to I-95 for the new double-decked roadway
- Construction of support piers for the double-decked roadway within the Midtown Interchange
- Installation of stay-in-place forms and reinforcing steel in preparation for concrete deck pours for the new double-decked roadway

WEEKEND DAYTIME S.R. 836 LANE CLOSURES
- Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 – One westbound left lane on I-395/S.R. 836 from east of I-95 to east of NW 12 Avenue and one eastbound left lane from NW 12 Avenue to I-95 will be closed for bridge foundation work between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
COMPLETE CLOSURE OF EASTBOUND S.R. 836 AT NW 17 AVENUE
- Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18 and Sunday, September 20 through Friday, September 25 – All eastbound S.R. 836 travel lanes will be closed at NW 17 Avenue between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. The start and end times will be adjusted on special event days.
The detours noted below and shown here will be in place to guide drivers around the work area. Drivers on eastbound S.R. 836 will:- Exit at NW 17 Avenue, then continue south across NW 7 Street
- Turn left at SW 1 Street and continue east
- Turn right at South Miami Avenue
- Turn right to access the ramp to I-95 north or south
- Drivers going to Biscayne Boulevard and the MacArthur Causeway can continue east on SW 1 Street and turn left on Biscayne Boulevard to connect with the MacArthur Causeway entrance ramp at NE 11 Terrace
Drivers on NW 12 Avenue wanting to access eastbound S.R. 836, I-95, Biscayne Boulevard, and the MacArthur Causeway can continue south on NW 12 Avenue, turn left at SW 1 Street, and follow the detours above.
FULL CLOSURE OF WESTBOUND S.R. 836
- Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18 and Sunday, September 20 through Friday, September 25 – All westbound lanes on S.R. 836 will be closed as needed from NW 12 Avenue to NW 17 Avenue between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The Friday closures will be implemented between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. The start and end times will be adjusted on special event days. - Exit at the NW 12 Avenue ramp, then turn left on NW 12 Avenue
