On Sunday, October 11, crews completed the installation of a massive reinforcing steel cage for a new straddle bent along S.R. 836. Weighing about 127,000 pounds and measuring 130 feet long, the cage was carefully lifted by cranes and lowered into the formwork.
To complete this complex operation safely, crews brought in about 30 truckloads of material to build and level a stable working pad on the roadway for the cranes. The successful installation marks another important milestone in constructing the new double-decked S.R. 836 roadway.

CONCRETE POUR ADVANCES THE NEW S.R. 836 DOUBLE-DECKED ROADWAY WEST OF THE MIAMI RIVER

The video shows crews completing a major concrete pour on October 3, for the new double-decked S.R. 836 roadway just west of the Miami River. The operation used one concrete pump and approximately 60 concrete trucks to place 590 cubic yards of concrete — roughly 2.4 million pounds — as crews continue advancing construction of the new elevated roadway.

CONCRETE POUR FOR THE WESTBOUND I-395 SIGNATURE BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE

Construction continues to advance on the westbound I-395 Signature Bridge superstructure, with crews installing reinforcing steel, formwork, and post-tensioning ducts and placing concrete for the massive box-girder deck. The post-tensioning system will add strength as the deck is constructed and work with the bridge’s arches and stay cables to support the completed superstructure. Recent concrete operations have included pours for the deck, webs, and diaphragms that make up the box girder. The video shows one of the largest concrete pumps in the country in action during a recent pour on the westbound Signature Bridge superstructure. As work progresses, these sections are coming together to form the new westbound I-395 roadway.

This drone video offers an aerial view of ongoing construction on the I-395 Signature Bridge. Arches 1, 2, 4, and 5 are closed, while crews continue work on the first of three cast-in-place structural elements for each of the two remaining arches, 3 and 6. Other work shown includes the installation of falsework, formwork, and reinforcing steel, along with concrete pours for the westbound Signature Bridge superstructure, which will ultimately be supported by the arches and stay cables.
MAJOR MILESTONE ACHIEVED AT SIGNATURE BRIDGE ARCH #6

The project team recently reached another major milestone with the successful completion of the foundation pour for Signature Bridge Arch #6, located adjacent to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. This was the second-largest concrete and most complex foundation pour of the entire project and represents a significant step toward construction of one of the two remaining arches.
The foundation measures 120 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 16 feet deep, and required approximately 3,672 cubic yards of concrete, delivered by 408 concrete trucks, placed by four concrete pumps (with a fifth on standby). To ensure the concrete cures properly, crews installed an advanced cooling system consisting of more than 30,000 feet of tubing circulating chilled water from a large industrial chiller, with a backup chiller on site for redundancy.
STRADDLE BENT FORMWORK ERECTED

The time lapse video shows the successful erection of formwork for the final straddle bent support structure, which will span the full width of eastbound S.R. 836. The formwork measures 134 feet long and weighs approximately 266,000 pounds. The operation required two heavy-lift cranes and the delivery of approximately 26 truckloads of limerock to construct a temporary crane pad. Once the work was complete, the material was removed, the roadway was cleaned, and all lanes were reopened to traffic. The next step in constructing the straddle bent will involve assembling and installing a reinforcing steel cage in preparation for the concrete pour.
ANOTHER MILESTONE ACHIEVED – COMPLETION OF THE INSTALLATION OF ALL PRECAST ARCH # 4 SEGMENTS

On Friday, May 15, the project team completed the installation of all 65 precast arch segments for Arch #4 that soars 252 feet over Biscayne Boulevard. Each segment is unique and weighs approximately 90 tons.

The Engineering and Public Works Roadshow launched its 2025 tour on Friday, February 14, at the foot of Miami’s Signature Bridge construction site. The Roadshow stop included remarks from FDOT District Six Secretary Stacy Miller and executives from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). They were joined by representatives from local elected officials, as well as the engineers and public works professionals who are making the project possible.

On WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 25, a new traffic pattern was implemented for drivers on northbound I-95 heading to eastbound I-395 to open newly constructed bridges. Electronic message boards and other signage will is in place to alert drivers to the new pattern.

STATE ROAD (S.R.) 836 BRIDGE CAP SEGMENT AND BEAM LIFTER

The S.R. 836 bridge cap segment and beam lifter started operations on Tuesday evening, June 28. The 480-foot-long lifter or gantry was specifically designed to install bridge cap segments and beams for this project. To complete the new S.R. 836 double decked roadway, the lifter will erect 145 bridge cap segments and 363 bridge beams. NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN ON THE WESTBOUND I-395 RAMP TO NORTHBOUND I-95

TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 28 – The ramp from westbound I-395 to northbound I-95 will be closed and traffic will be shifted to a temporary single-lane ramp on the left side of the road. Variable Message Signs (VMS) will direct drivers going west on I-395 who want to go north on I-95 to the new temporary ramp.
NORTH BAYSHORE DRIVE RAMP CLOSURE

The North Bayshore Drive ramp to eastbound MacArthur Causeway will be permanently closed on Thursday morning, September 2, to continue foundation work for the new I-395 Signature Bridge and the construction of the new permanent ramp.
CONCRETE POUR FOR THE SIGNATURE BRIDGE CENTER PIER FOOTER

On Sunday morning, July 25, the contractor completed the concrete pour for the Signature Bridge center pier footer. The operation took approximately 33 hours to complete and involved 550 trucks delivering concrete to the site with four concrete pump trucks working continuously to place the concrete into the footer. On Wednesday evening, September 25 the I-395/S.R. 836/I-95 Design-Build Project contractor installed an 30,000 pound, 106 foot long overhead truss with a Dynamic Message Sign over the northbound I-95 lanes at approximately NW 26 Street.
